Capitol City Baptist Church (CCBC)

In the beginning...

In 1958, Rev. James Cook and Rev. Bruce Kerr led a Bible study in the home of the Prudencio family at Philamlife Homes, Quezon City. The group grew both spiritually and numerically until they decided to hold worship services. This Bible study became the core of Capitol City Baptist Church (CCBC). They rented Storefront no. 18, one of the stalls in the commercial center in Philamlife Homes. Rev. Cook would be the Pastor.

July 2, 1959 marked a milestone in the history of CCBC. The 23 charter members held its first official meeting. They approved four business items: 1) Capitol City Baptist Church as the name of the church; 2) the church constitution; 3) election of four deacons, church treasurer, and church clerk; 4) appointment of a missionary for Bago Bantay with a monthly honorarium of P20.

During its first year, CCBC launched a massive evangelistic campaign. Visitation teams of Far East Bible Institute and Seminary students were organized. Daily Vacation Bible School was implemented. A daughter church (only the first of many) was established. The Lord added to the church. By the end of the first year, membership practically doubled.

Property acquired…
Even as early as July 1959, CCBC already envisioned a building of her own. They believed that church will outgrow the present worship place. In 1964, the Lord led CCBC to purchase a 1,000 sq. meters. At that time, the lot was a cogonal piece of land. It turned out to be a wise decision because West Avenue is now a major thoroughfare. (CCBC was the first ever recipient of what is now called “Plant-A-Church-Together” program of Conservative Baptist Association of the Philippines).

CCBC dedicated her church building on April 18, 1965. The church rejoiced at the very spacious and beautiful house of worship God gave them. In 1968, the church constructed a row of apartments to serve initially as facilities for the CB Bible College. During weekends, its rooms were used for Sunday school.

But the building soon became too cramped. In 1982, the church purchased the lot adjacent to the building. The asking price was a whopping P1.5M. But the owners testified that the Lord compelled them to accede to CCBC’s highest offer of P1.2M! Once again, God vindicated the faith of His people!

Attendance grew again until the worshippers filled up every available space at the back and in the corridors. In 1985, to ease the overflow, the right wing of the sanctuary was constructed.
Trials and triumphs…
The enemy tried to derail God’s people. Attendance dwindled to almost half. However, through the prayers of the believers, God sent His chosen servants to rally the church together. Thus, from a momentary slide, the Lord nursed CCBC back to health.

Then in 1984 God brought the discipleship strategy of Evangelism Explosion (EE). Since then about 400 were equipped in sharing the Gospel and in training others after 32 training semesters. A training lasts 16 weeks. A unique feature of EE is its on-the-job training. Trainees learn first-hand how to share the Gospel through visitations with contact persons. Many members of the church are direct results of this ministry.

In addition to that, CCBC hosts annual EE Clinics since 1985. In an EE clinic, pastors and workers go through a one-week intensive seminar so that they can start their own EE equipping ministry in their churches. For the past two decades, EE through CCBC trained hundreds of pastors and lay leaders. They came from many parts of the Philippines and even from other countries like New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Pakistan, India, Bahrain and the United States. Members who took the Clinic and went abroad to work brought EE to places like Saipan, Canada and many others. Thus, CCBC changed its battle cry from “In the heart of the nation with the NATION at heart” to “in the heart of the nation with the NATIONS at heart.”

With the nations at heart…
Since its birth, CCBC already had a heart for missions. One of its first official acts was to appoint a missionary. From one daughter church, CCBC produced through missionary work and giving more than 40 daughters, granddaughters and great granddaughter churches as of last count in 1987. We lost track of the actual count since then.

Presently, CCBC is actively supporting daughter churches in Arayat, Pampanga, Caloocan, Catarman, Dela Costa, Filinvest, Sauyo (Novaliches, Quezon City), Balogo (Marinduque), Makati, Cubao, Valenzuela, Nueva Ecija, Benguet, Bulacan, Cabanatuan, and Nueva Vizcaya,

As the first century ended, the church looked forward with the vision of Aiming to Double by 2005 - To Grow in Health and Double in MIGHT (Membership, Income, Going and Giving to Missions, Her daughter church, and Trained leadership & Youth development).

With this continued growth in the church’s desire to grow within and outside the church, the vision was later changed to SEND CCBC in mid 2000 - Strategically Engaged in Nations’ Discipleship through Christ centered Community transformation, Birthing and Building up Churches. The congregation were given a greater challenge to draw an impact not only within the four walls of the church but throughout its outside communities as well, emphasizing it more when CCBC Sends was launched as the primary goal of every member on CCBC’s 50th year.

At present, the Lord continues to perform great works and miracles in and through the church, and His faithfulness has kept the church intact in desiring to serve Him, His people, and the unreached for His greater glory.
